Bunratty is a small village on the Ratty river near the Shannon estuary, just off the motorway between Limerick and Ennis, and its skyline is its story: a great 15th-century tower house that is among the most complete medieval castles in Ireland. Shannon Airport is about ten minutes away, which has made the village the traditional first and last stop of an Irish holiday for over sixty years.

Land at Shannon, sleep minutes from the runway, and wake up beside a castle rather than in an airport hotel; or spend the last night here, hand back the car in the morning and start the trip home rested. Bunratty Castle
The great tower house was built in the 15th century by the MacNamaras and became the chief seat of the O’Briens, Earls of Thomond, before being restored in the 1950s by Lord Gort and opened to the public in 1960. Its halls carry one of the finest collections of medieval furniture in the country.
Bunratty Folk Park
Around the castle, 26 acres recreate the Ireland of the 19th century with more than thirty buildings, from blacksmith’s forge to village street, post office, schoolhouse and pub, with costumed guides keeping the fires lit. It is one of the best family attractions in the west.
The medieval banquet
The castle has hosted its twice-nightly medieval banquets since 1963, invented to catch transatlantic passengers stopping at Shannon, with mead, a four-course feast and the Bunratty Castle Singers. Millions have attended, and it remains the most cheerfully theatrical night out in Clare.
Durty Nelly’s
The famous pub beside the castle bridge trades on a claimed founding date of 1620 and is one of the best-known bars in Ireland, with music most nights and low-beamed rooms that have absorbed four centuries of stories. First-night jetlag has no better cure.
Craggaunowen
A short drive north near Quin, Craggaunowen recreates prehistoric and early Christian Ireland around a 16th-century castle, with a crannóg lake dwelling, a ring fort and the actual leather boat Tim Severin sailed across the Atlantic in 1977 to prove St Brendan’s voyage possible.
Limerick and King John’s Castle
Limerick city is a short drive east, where King John’s Castle has stood over the Shannon since the start of the 13th century, its walls and towers now wrapped around a modern visitor centre. The Milk Market and the city’s Georgian streets fill out the day.
The Clare coast
Bunratty sits at the start of the road west: Ennis and its medieval friary are minutes up the motorway, and the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are about an hour away. A first or last night here borrows a taste of everything Clare does best.
Getting to Bunratty
Bunratty is just off the N18 at its own junction, about ten minutes and eight kilometres from Shannon Airport, with Limerick city and Ennis each a short drive in opposite directions. Bus Éireann’s Limerick to Shannon Airport route serves the village. It is the simplest first or last night in Irish touring, and the castle floodlit after dark is a fine welcome to the country.
