A small Clare village that punches well above its size, standing between Shannon Airport and two of Ireland’s best-known castles.
Newmarket-on-Fergus is a small east Clare village on the N18 between Ennis and Limerick, just a few minutes from Shannon Airport. It grew up around a crossing of the River Fergus, and today it is best known for what surrounds it: Dromoland Castle, the historic seat of the O’Briens, Barons of Inchiquin and descendants of the eleventh century high king Brian Boru, sits on its own estate right beside the village.
For a B&B here, that location is the whole draw. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Ireland’s most complete restored medieval fortress, is a short drive away, and Knappogue Castle, a fifteenth century MacNamara tower house near Quin, is not much further. Both make an easy half-day out without committing to a long drive.
The village itself has a genuine claim to history too: the “Great Clare Find” of 1854, a hoard of Bronze Age gold ornaments turned up during railway works nearby, ranks among the largest Bronze Age discoveries made in western Europe. Ennis, Clare’s county town, is fifteen to twenty minutes up the N18 for a bigger night out.

Booking Cahergal House direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Cahergal House holds a 4-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
