A Victorian seaside resort on Liscannor Bay that grew into one of Ireland’s best-known surf towns, with a championship links behind the beach.
Lahinch grew from a fishing hamlet into a proper Victorian resort after the West Clare Railway arrived in 1887, and the promenade that opened in 1893 still fronts the long sandy beach on Liscannor Bay. Today the town’s name travels furthest for two things, surf and golf, and both happen within a couple of hundred metres of the main street.
For a B&B in Lahinch, the rhythm is simple: the beach across the road in the morning, the Cliffs of Moher or the Burren in the afternoon, and a lively main street of pubs and restaurants in the evening. Lahinch Golf Club
Founded in 1892, with a links laid out by Old Tom Morris and redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in 1927, Lahinch is often called the St Andrews of Ireland. The Old Course hosted the Irish Open in 2019, and the dunes it threads through start directly behind the town.
The promenade
The sea wall and promenade were formally opened in 1893, and the walkway still runs the length of the beach. It is the town’s meeting place, busy with walkers, swimmers and surf-watchers in every season.
The Cliffs of Moher
Ireland’s most-visited natural attraction stands about eleven kilometres up the coast road through Liscannor, with 200-metre cliffs running for several kilometres above the Atlantic. From a Lahinch base it is an easy early-morning or late-evening visit, either side of the coach crowds.
Ennistymon and the Cascades
A few minutes inland, Ennistymon hides the Cascades, a broad run of falls on the River Inagh directly behind its old-fashioned main street. After heavy rain they are among the most photographed sights in Clare.
Doolin
The famous music village is around twenty minutes north, close enough for an evening session and back. The drive can loop past the Cliffs of Moher, which turns a night of music into one of the best short outings in the county.
Getting to Lahinch
Lahinch is under an hour from Shannon Airport by car, via Ennis on the N85, and sits on the N67 coast road. Bus Éireann’s route between Galway and Ennis stops in the town daily, also serving Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher, so a car-free stay is workable. Parking near the promenade fills fast on good summer days, so ask your B&B about parking when booking.
