A handsome Georgian marina town at the mouth of the Shannon estuary, gateway to Scattery Island and the Loop Head Peninsula, with Ireland’s only resident group of wild bottlenose dolphins on its doorstep.
Kilrush is a west Clare market town built around a wide, tree-lined square, laid out by the Vandeleur family in the eighteenth century where the Shannon estuary begins to open into the Atlantic. Its lock-gated marina, one of the largest on Ireland’s west coast, has turned the town into a proper base for getting out on the water as well as staying on dry land.
For a B&B in Kilrush, that mix of heritage town and working harbour is the draw. Mornings can start with a wander around the Georgian square and the old market house, before an afternoon boat trip out into the estuary, and the town’s pubs and restaurants are an easy walk home in the evening.

Set in woodland on the edge of town, the restored Vandeleur Walled Garden was once the kitchen garden of the Vandeleur family’s Kilrush House, and now combines subtropical planting with a visitor centre on the family’s history and a woodland café.
The Georgian square
The town itself was laid out by the Vandeleurs around a broad market square, with the old Market House and a network of Georgian streets still forming the heart of Kilrush today.
Loop Head Peninsula
West of the town, the Loop Head Peninsula is one of the quieter corners of the Wild Atlantic Way, ending at a working lighthouse perched on dramatic cliffs looking out to the Atlantic.
Getting to Kilrush
Kilrush sits on the N67/N68 in west Clare, about forty-five minutes from Ennis and just over an hour from Shannon Airport. A small car ferry crosses the Shannon estuary between Killimer, just outside Kilrush, and Tarbert in Kerry, cutting out a long detour around Limerick for anyone heading south into Kerry.
