Carrigaholt is a small harbour village on the Loop Head Peninsula in west Clare, built where the Moyarta River meets the Shannon Estuary. A five-storey tower house, Carrigaholt Castle, built around 1480 by the McMahon chieftains, still stands over the pier, and the village itself is little more than a row of houses and pubs around the harbour, which is much of its charm.
For a B&B in Carrigaholt, the big draw is the water. Boat tours run from the pier out into the estuary from spring to autumn to see the resident bottlenose dolphins, one of the largest groups of their kind in Europe, and the surrounding coastline of sea stacks, caves and cliffs gives plenty of walking and birdwatching besides.
It is also a genuinely quiet base, further off the beaten track than Kilkee or Doolin, which makes it a good choice if the aim of the trip is to slow down rather than tick off sights.

Boat trips depart from Carrigaholt’s Castle Pier from April to October to see the Shannon Estuary’s resident bottlenose dolphins, one of the largest known groups in European waters.
Carrigaholt Castle
A well-preserved fifteenth-century tower house built by the McMahon chieftains, standing over the harbour and one of the most complete castles of its kind on the Loop Head Peninsula.
Loop Head Lighthouse
The peninsula’s working lighthouse marks the point where the Shannon Estuary meets the open Atlantic, roughly 20 minutes from Carrigaholt by road via Kilbaha, with dramatic cliff views along the way.
Getting to Carrigaholt
Carrigaholt is reached via the R487 coast road on the Loop Head Peninsula, about 14km from Kilkee and roughly an hour and a quarter from Ennis or Shannon Airport. The Killimer to Tarbert car ferry across the Shannon is a useful shortcut for anyone coming from Kerry or Limerick, cutting out the long drive around via Limerick city.
