A historic town on the shore of Lough Derg where the Shannon narrows, twinned across a Shannon bridge with Ballina, Co. Tipperary, and built on the legacy of Brian Boru.
Killaloe sits on the western bank of the Shannon in east Clare, just where the river widens out into Lough Derg, and is linked across the water to its twin town of Ballina in Co. Tipperary. The town was the seat of Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland, whose stronghold of Kincora is believed to have stood here, and the two towns together have long made a single community split across a county boundary and a bridge.
For a B&B in Killaloe, that setting is the whole draw: the medieval St Flannan's Cathedral and the old stone bridge in the town itself, the water of Lough Derg for cruising, rowing and fishing right outside the door, and Ballina's pubs and restaurants a short walk across the river. Killaloe and Ballina between them have long been a base for exploring Lough Derg by boat.
The crossing itself has recently changed. The historic thirteen-arch stone bridge, built in the early 18th century, carried traffic between the two towns for almost three centuries. In May 2025 the new Brian Ború Bridge opened as part of the Killaloe to Ballina bypass, the first new vehicular Shannon crossing in the region in decades, and the old bridge has since been given over to pedestrians and cyclists.

Brian Boru and Kincora
Killaloe is inseparable from Brian Boru, the High King who ruled from Kincora, believed to have stood on the site of the town, before his death at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. The nearby ringfort of Béal Ború keeps the connection alive.
St Flannan's Cathedral
A striking Romanesque cathedral in the heart of the town, with roots going back to the 12th century and some of the finest medieval stonework in the Shannon region.
Lough Derg
The lake opens out immediately north of the town, a long-established centre for cruising, sailing and rowing on the Shannon, with Killaloe and Ballina among its main harbour towns.
The bridges of Killaloe
The 18th-century stone bridge, now pedestrianised, and the new Brian Ború Bridge alongside it give the town a rare double crossing, linking Killaloe in Clare to Ballina in Tipperary.
Getting to Killaloe
Killaloe is about 20 minutes from Limerick city and around half an hour from Shannon Airport, making it an easy Shannon-side base. Ballina, its twin town across the bridge in Co. Tipperary, is reached on foot or by car in a couple of minutes.
