Quilty is a small, working coastal village on the Wild Atlantic Way in west Clare, strung along the shore between Spanish Point and Kilkee. It has none of the scale of its better-known neighbours, but it carries a genuinely remarkable local story: in 1907 the French ship Léon XIII was wrecked on the rocks in Quilty Bay, and local fishermen rowed out into the storm in their currachs to rescue the crew. The village’s Star of the Sea church, built in the years afterwards, is shaped like an upturned boat in tribute, with the ship’s bell and a model of the Léon XIII kept inside.
