A busy market town on the River Sullane, historically the gateway to Muskerry and still the main stop on the road between Cork city and Killarney.
Macroom sits on the N22 roughly midway between Cork city and Killarney, and that position as a crossroads town is really its defining feature. The remains of Macroom Castle, once the seat of the MacCarthys of Muskerry and later home for a time to Admiral William Penn, stand at the entrance to the town square, a reminder that this was a place of some importance long before it became a stop on the modern road. The town itself is a working one, with a wide main square and the everyday shops and pubs of a west Cork market town.

Gougane Barra, the small monastic island lake at the source of the River Lee tucked into the mountains, is around half an hour’s drive away, and the dramatic Pass of Keimaneigh on the road toward Bantry is not far beyond it. The Pass of Keimaneigh
A dramatic, steep-sided gorge carrying the road between Ballingeary and Bantry, a short drive beyond Gougane Barra. It is a striking piece of mountain scenery on the way toward the west Cork coast.
