Bantry sits at the head of Bantry Bay, a deep, sheltered natural harbour guarded by Whiddy Island, on the N71 in the heart of West Cork. It is a proper market town rather than a resort, the shopping and eating hub for a wide rural coastline, and its Friday market on Wolfe Tone Square is billed as the biggest in West Cork.

History adds the colour. In December 1796 a French fleet carrying Wolfe Tone came within sight of the town before storms scattered it, a story told in the armada exhibition at Bantry House, whose terraced gardens and hundred steps look out over the bay the fleet never landed in.

Bantry House and Garden
Seat of the White family since the mid-18th century and among the first Irish country houses to open its doors to the public, in 1946, Bantry House stands over the bay with seven terraces of gardens. Climbing the Hundred Steps behind the house earns the best view in West Cork.
The 1796 French Armada
The exhibition centre in the courtyard of Bantry House tells how a French invasion fleet carrying Theobald Wolfe Tone was wrecked and scattered by winter storms at the mouth of the bay, and the town square bears Tone’s name and statue. One frigate, La Surveillante, still lies on the bay floor.
The Sheep’s Head Way
The 88-kilometre looped walking route out the wild, narrow Sheep’s Head peninsula begins and ends in Bantry, and its short showpiece, the Lighthouse Loop at the very tip, is a spectacular couple of hours above the Atlantic. It is some of the quietest coastal walking in Ireland.
Whiddy Island
The ferry from Bantry pier crosses to Whiddy in about ten minutes, opening a gentle island of green lanes, a five-kilometre loop walk and a single pub by the pontoon. It is the easiest island day out on this coast.
The Friday market
Wolfe Tone Square fills every Friday morning with food, craft and bric-a-brac stalls, at their biggest on the first Friday of the month, the traditional fair day. Staying in town means having it on your doorstep before the day trippers arrive.
Garnish Island
From Glengarriff, twenty minutes up the N71, ferries cross past a seal colony to Ilnacullin, the Italianate island garden created in the 1910s, with its casita, clock tower and walled garden ripening in the Gulf Stream air. It is one of the great gardens of Ireland.
Gougane Barra
About half an hour inland, St Finbarr founded his 6th-century monastery on an island in a mountain lake at Gougane Barra, where a small chapel now stands at the end of a causeway with a forest park behind. It is among the most photographed and most peaceful places in Cork.
Music in Bantry House
The West Cork Chamber Music Festival has filled Bantry House with performances each summer for three decades, drawing international musicians to a candlelit library above the bay. Festival dates fill the town’s beds, so book well ahead.
Getting to Bantry
Bantry is about an hour and twenty minutes from Cork city on the N71, and a little over an hour from Cork Airport. Bus Éireann’s route between Cork and Castletownbere stops in the town several times daily. The N71 runs on to Glengarriff and over the county bounds to Kenmare and Killarney, which makes Bantry a natural link in a longer southwest loop.
