A historic river-crossing village on the Bandon, once busier than either Kinsale or Bandon itself, on the main road between Cork city and west Cork.
Innishannon is a village on the River Bandon in mid Cork, first recorded in writing as far back as 837 AD. For centuries before bridges spanned the river here, this was the only crossing point into west Cork, and the village grew rich on that traffic; it was, for a time, bigger and busier than both Bandon and Kinsale.
That river-crossing history still shapes the place: a village built along the water, with a bridge at its centre and the N71 running straight through, on the main route between Cork city and Kinsale or Bandon. A B&B here works well as a quiet, well-placed base for day trips in both directions, without the summer crowds of Kinsale itself.
Innishannon received a market and fair grant as early as 1256, and a royal charter from Henry V in 1412 granting the local de Barry family the river crossing. A branch railway line reached the village in 1849 and ran until 1961, part of the old Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway, though the road is now the only way through.
Things to do near Grey Gables Farmhouse B&B
The River Bandon crossing
Long before any bridge existed downstream, Innishannon controlled the only crossing of the River Bandon into west Cork, which is why a small village here once outgrew both Bandon and Kinsale.
The royal charter of 1412
In 1412, Henry V granted a royal charter covering the village and its river crossing to the local de Barry family, formal recognition of how important the ferry point had become.
A gateway to west Cork
Sitting on the N71, Innishannon is genuinely central: Cork city is around twenty-five minutes away, and Kinsale and Bandon are both close by in opposite directions, making it a workable base for both.
Getting to Innishannon
Innishannon is on the N71, roughly twenty-five minutes southwest of Cork city and about fifteen minutes from both Kinsale and Bandon, which makes it a convenient midpoint for touring west Cork without committing to a base right on the coast.
