Staying in Union Hall

A small working fishing harbour on Glandore Harbour in west Cork, tucked between Glandore village and Castletownshend.

Union Hall sits on the western side of Glandore Harbour, a sheltered natural inlet on the west Cork coast, with the villages of Glandore and Castletownshend a short drive or a longer coastal walk away on either side. It’s a proper working fishing village rather than a tourist set piece, with boats still landing at the pier, which gives a B&B here a genuinely local feel alongside the scenery.

The area rewards slow exploration: wooded walks around Rineen, the narrow one-lane Poulgorm Bridge on the road to Glandore, and some of west Cork’s best-known diving sites just offshore. It also sits within easy reach of Skibbereen and Clonakilty for a bigger night out.

Things to do near Lis-Ardagh Lodge

Glandore Harbour

The harbour that Union Hall shares with Glandore village has been settled since at least the Bronze Age, and was later held for centuries by the O’Donovan family, whose castle remains stand on the Glandore side.

Rineen Woods

A network of shaded walking trails around Rineen, just outside the village, gives an easy loop through woodland above the harbour, a contrast to the open coastal walks nearby.

Wreck diving

The wreck of the Kowloon Bridge, one of the largest dive wrecks in Europe, lies off the coast near Union Hall and draws scuba divers from well beyond west Cork.

Castletownshend

A short drive west, this steep, single-street village of colourful houses running down to its own harbour is one of the prettiest in west Cork, with links to the writers Somerville and Ross.

Getting to Union Hall

Union Hall is on the R597, about an hour southwest of Cork city via Bandon and Clonakilty. The nearest airport is Cork, roughly an hour and a quarter away, and Bus Éireann services connect Skibbereen, a short drive away, with Cork city.

Booking Lis-Ardagh Lodge direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

Lis-Ardagh Lodge holds a 4-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
