West Cork’s main market town, a working town first and a tourist stop second, with a well-told Great Famine history and Lough Hyne and Baltimore’s islands close at hand.

Skibbereen sits on the River Ilen a few kilometres inland from the coast, and it functions as the commercial hub for the surrounding stretch of west Cork: a proper market town with a busy main street of shops and pubs, rather than a village built purely around visitors. That gives it a grounded, lived-in feel, and a B&B here puts you among locals as much as tourists, with everything you need for a longer stay within walking distance.

The town’s history is bound up with the Great Famine of the 1840s. West Cork was among the worst-hit parts of the country, and Skibbereen in particular lost a large share of its population to hunger, disease and emigration. That history is told in detail at the Skibbereen Heritage Centre, housed in the old gasworks building, and marked more starkly at the Abbeystrowry Famine burial ground on the edge of town, where thousands of the dead are buried in mass graves. It is one of the most direct places in Ireland to engage with that period.

As a base, Skibbereen also opens onto some of west Cork’s best coastal scenery without being swallowed by it. Lough Hyne, a short drive away, was designated Europe’s first marine nature reserve and is a beautiful, sheltered saltwater lake for a swim or a walk around its wooded shore. The harbour village of Baltimore, a little further on, has ferries out to Cape Clear Island and Sherkin Island, both easy half-day trips for anyone staying in the town.

Skibbereen also sits well for touring further afield, with Mizen Head and the rest of the Mizen peninsula reachable within an hour, so a stay here can anchor several days of exploring west Cork rather than a single overnight stop.
