Blarney is a planned 18th-century estate village about eight kilometres northwest of Cork city, laid out by its landlord family around a broad village green that is still the centre of things. Above the trees beside it stands Blarney Castle, built in 1446 by Cormac Láidir MacCarthy, home of the most famously kissed stone in the world.

The great mill building of 1823 once spun the village’s wool and now houses one of Ireland’s best-known heritage stores, a short walk from the green. It is dangerous territory for anyone weak on Aran jumpers.
The village green
Blarney was laid out as a planned village in the 1760s with weavers’ houses facing the square, and the grass green at its heart still belongs to the castle estate. The pubs and cafés around it make the village feel like a destination rather than a car park for the stone.
Cork city
The English Market has traded in the city centre since 1788, the bells of Shandon can be rung by visitors climbing St Anne’s tower of 1722, and the city’s food scene is the best in the south. All of it sits one short bus ride from the village.
First and last nights
Cork Airport is about twenty minutes away by car, which makes Blarney a natural first or last stop for a trip landing in the south. Arriving to a village green and a castle beats an airport corridor by any measure.
Getting to Blarney
Blarney is about eight kilometres from Cork city, with regular city buses running to and from the centre, and Cork Airport is roughly twenty minutes by car on the far side of the city. The N20 Limerick road passes close by, putting the village on the natural route north toward Killarney or Limerick. Evening arrivals should note the castle is floodlit and the green minutes from every bed in the village.
