Doneraile grew up as an estate town around Doneraile Court, the Georgian house of the St Leger family that stands within Doneraile Park, four hundred acres of naturalistic parkland laid out in the style associated with Capability Brown. The house sits on the site of an earlier castle, and the walled park, now managed by the OPW and open to the public year round with free admission, is one of the most visited free attractions in County Cork.
The wider area also has a genuine literary connection: the poet Edmund Spenser held an estate at nearby Kilcolman, where he is believed to have written much of The Faerie Queene before the castle was burned during the Nine Years’ War in 1598.
