A steep, colourful harbour town on Cork Harbour, remembered as the Titanic’s last port of call and topped by one of the tallest cathedrals in Ireland.
Cobh climbs steeply up from the water on the south side of Great Island, overlooking one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Known as Queenstown for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the departure point for around 2.5 million Irish emigrants heading to North America, and that layered history, part port town, part seaside resort, still shapes the place today.
Its most famous moment came on 11 April 1912, when the Titanic made her final call here before crossing the Atlantic and 123 passengers boarded from tenders in the harbour. The Titanic Experience Cobh, housed in the original White Star Line ticket office, tells that story from the point of view of the people who left from this quay, and the town’s waterfront still looks much as it did in photographs from that morning.
