The wildest of west Cork’s three great peninsulas, a rugged ring of mountain passes, copper-mining villages and one of Ireland’s busiest fishing ports.
The Beara Peninsula reaches out between Bantry Bay and the Kenmare River, shared between Cork and Kerry, and it’s markedly quieter than its neighbour the Ring of Kerry despite equally dramatic scenery. The Ring of Beara road and the Beara Way walking route both circle the peninsula, linking small former mining and fishing villages, so a B&B anywhere along it works as a base for touring the whole loop rather than one fixed sight.
Castletownbere, on the peninsula’s south side, is the largest settlement and Ireland’s busiest whitefish port, sheltered by Bere Island just offshore. From there the road climbs west to Allihies, a former copper-mining village whose spoil heaps and engine houses still mark the hillsides above the beach, and on to Dursey Island at the very tip.
Inland, the Healy Pass carries the road over the Caha Mountains between Adrigole and Lauragh in a run of sharp hairpins, with views back over Bantry Bay from the summit that are among the best on the whole Wild Atlantic Way. The peninsula suits travellers who want scenery without crowds, and who don’t mind a slower pace of driving between villages.

Ireland’s only cable car, and the only one in Europe that crosses open sea, carries passengers 250m above the water to Dursey Island at the peninsula’s tip, a journey of about fifteen minutes each way.
Castletownbere
The peninsula’s main town and Ireland’s busiest whitefish port, sheltered by Bere Island, with a working harbour, seafood landed daily and Puxley Castle nearby on the Beara Way.
Allihies copper mines
This former mining village on the peninsula’s western tip has spoil heaps and engine houses from copper mining that ran from the 1810s until 1884, now explained at the Allihies Copper Mine Museum.

A long-distance looped walking route around the full peninsula, linking fishing villages, mountain passes and Bere Island, popular with walkers doing it in stages over several days.
Getting to Beara Peninsula
The Beara Peninsula is reached via the N71 through Glengarriff at its eastern end, about two hours west of Cork city, or via Kenmare on the Kerry side. Cork Airport is the nearest, roughly two hours away, and the peninsula’s villages are linked by a limited rural bus service, so a car is the practical way to see it.
