Ireland’s largest whitefish port and the main town of the Beara Peninsula, tucked behind Bere Island on one of the safest natural harbours in the world.
Castletownbere sits on Berehaven Harbour at the foot of the Caha Mountains, on the wilder and less-visited Beara Peninsula in west Cork. It is a proper working town rather than a resort, with a busy fishing fleet that lands and exports whitefish, and a colourful main street of shops, pubs and seafood restaurants that reflects that trade.
For visitors, a B&B here is a genuine base for the whole Beara Peninsula: the town sits directly on the Beara Way walking route and the Ring of Beara driving route, and it is the departure point for Bere Island and, further west, Ireland’s only cable car out to Dursey Island.
The pace is set by the harbour and the tides rather than tourism, but that is part of the appeal, a real fishing town that also happens to be surrounded by some of the best scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Things to do near Summer Hill
Berehaven Harbour
Sheltered behind Bere Island, this is reckoned to be one of the safest natural harbours in the world, and it is the reason Castletownbere developed into Ireland’s largest whitefish port, still exporting thousands of tonnes of fish a year.
Dursey Island cable car
A short drive west of the town, Ireland’s only cable car carries passengers and even bicycles across the sound to Dursey Island, a seven-and-a-half-minute crossing over open water.
Bere Island
A regular ferry runs from the harbour to Bere Island, where walking and cycling routes pass old Martello towers built during the Napoleonic era.
Dunboy Castle
A couple of kilometres west of the town, the ruins of Dunboy Castle mark the stronghold of the O’Sullivan Beare clan, besieged and destroyed by English forces in 1602 after the Battle of Kinsale.
The Beara Way
This long-distance trail loops the entire peninsula and passes through Castletownbere, giving walkers a base with proper facilities partway round.
Getting to Castletownbere
Castletownbere is about an hour and a half from Cork city and a similar drive from Kenmare via the Healy Pass, one of the most scenic road routes in Ireland. There is no direct rail link, but Bus Éireann services connect the town to Cork, and Cork Airport is the nearest.
Booking Summer Hill direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Summer Hill holds a 4-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
