An east Cork village built around the ruins of an 800-year-old castle, now folded into the grounds of Castlemartyr Resort.
The castle that gives Castlemartyr its name was first built in 1210, reputedly under the Knights Templar, and passed through some notable hands over the centuries, including Sir Walter Raleigh, before Richard Boyle, the first Earl of Cork, bought it in 1602. It was largely destroyed during the Williamite wars in 1690 and left as a ruin, standing today within the grounds of the modern resort that took the castle’s name, still visible from the village itself.
Castlemartyr is a small east Cork village on the N25, about 30km east of Cork city and 16km west of Youghal, with Midleton just 10km away. It is a modest place to stay in its own right, but well placed for touring this stretch of east Cork, from Ballymaloe to the coast.

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
