Ballycotton is a small fishing village perched on a ledge of rock above Ballycotton Bay, about 45 minutes east of Cork city. Its harbour still holds a working fishing fleet, and the village looks out to Ballycotton Island and its lighthouse, one of only two lighthouses in Ireland painted black rather than white.
A B&B here suits anyone who wants a proper coastal village rather than a resort: a working harbour, a handful of pubs, and the Ballycotton Cliff Walk starting right from the edge of the village. It also sits close to Midleton and Youghal, making it a good base for touring the East Cork coast.
The lighthouse itself has a dramatic history. It was commissioned after the 1847 sinking of the ship Sirius nearby, and Ballycotton’s lifeboat crew went on to take part in one of the RNLI’s most celebrated rescues, the 1936 Daunt Rock lightship rescue, staying at sea for 49 hours straight.
Things to do near Sunville
Ballycotton Lighthouse
Built in 1851 and painted black in 1902 to distinguish it from a nearby daymark, this is one of only two black lighthouses in Ireland. It was automated in 1992 and still stands on its own small island just off the village.
The Ballycotton Cliff Walk
A way-marked path of around 5 miles follows the cliff edge from Ballycotton through Ballytrasna to Ballyandreen, with the Atlantic on one side and farmland on the other, and a beach at Ballytrasna along the way.
The Daunt Rock rescue
In February 1936, the Ballycotton lifeboat and her crew rescued seven people from a stricken lightship in a storm, a 79-hour mission that remains one of the most celebrated in RNLI history.
The working harbour
Ballycotton’s small harbour still supports a working fishing fleet, giving the village a genuine, lived-in feel rather than a purely tourist one.

Ballycotton is reached via the R632, about 45 minutes from Cork city and a short drive from Midleton and Youghal. Cork Airport is roughly 50 minutes away by car, and Bus Éireann services run to Midleton, from where connections continue on to Cork city.
