A steep, terraced town on the River Erne in south Donegal, often described as the oldest town in Ireland and the birthplace of Rory Gallagher.
Ballyshannon sits where the River Erne meets the sea, its streets rising steeply from the old bridge in tiers that give the town a distinctive shape from almost any angle. The name, Béal Átha Seanaigh, or the mouth of Seanach’s ford, refers to a figure from early Irish legend, and archaeological finds in the area, including Bronze Age burnt mounds and a pair of gold sun discs dating back over four thousand years, back up the town’s claim to be one of the oldest continuously settled places in the country.
The town’s more recent claim to fame is musical. Ballyshannon was the birthplace of guitarist Rory Gallagher, and every June bank holiday weekend the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival fills the town with blues and rock musicians and fans from well beyond Donegal, one of the larger events of its kind in Europe. Outside festival weekend, the town keeps a quieter rhythm, with the Erne running past below the main street and Assaroe Abbey’s ruins a short walk out the Rossnowlagh road.

Getting to Ballyshannon
Ballyshannon sits on the N15 between Sligo, about half an hour south, and Donegal town, around twenty minutes north, so it is a straightforward stop by car on the route along the northwest coast. There is no direct rail line this far into Donegal, but Bus Éireann’s Sligo to Derry route stops in the town, and Ireland West Airport at Knock, Sligo Airport and City of Derry Airport are all within roughly an hour’s drive, giving a few options depending on which direction you are travelling from.
