Arranmore, or Árainn Mhór, lies about 5km off the west Donegal coast and is reached by a short ferry crossing from Burtonport, in the heart of the Rosses. At around seven square miles, it is the second-biggest inhabited island in Ireland, with a settled, working community rather than a purely seasonal one, and staying here means genuinely being on island time, tides and ferry timetable included.
People have lived on Arranmore since prehistory; the promontory fort at Uilinn dates from roughly 800BC. The island’s more recent history is marked by hardship too. In 1851, at the height of the Famine, an evicted Arranmore family emigrated to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, and enough islanders followed over the following decades that Arranmore and Beaver Island have been formally twinned since 2000.
Today the appeal is the cliffs, sea caves and beaches along the island’s loop walk, freshwater lakes with brown and rainbow trout, and good sea angling and diving in the clear water offshore. The lighthouse and the old “cave of slaughter” are both stops on the waymarked Arranmore Way.
In the evenings, Arranmore is known for its traditional music and its pubs with open turf fires, and Coláiste Árainn Mhóir brings Irish-language summer students to the island each year, keeping the Gaeltacht culture very much alive rather than staged for visitors.

Burtonport is reached via the N56 through the Rosses, and Donegal (Carrickfinn) Airport is only about 15 minutes’ drive away, with flights to Dublin. There is no rail link to this part of Donegal.
