The most northerly point on the Irish mainland, a dramatic headland on the Inishowen Peninsula where the Wild Atlantic Way begins or ends.
Malin Head sits at the tip of the Inishowen Peninsula in north Donegal, in the townland of Ardmalin, and is either the first or last stop on the Wild Atlantic Way depending on which direction you are travelling. It is a remote, weather-beaten headland rather than a town, with the small, tidy village of Malin itself, built around a triangular green, a few kilometres back down the peninsula.
A B&B out here suits travellers doing the Inishowen 100 scenic drive or anyone after proper wild coastal scenery and dark, clear night skies away from any large town. The headland is a short, easy walk from end to end, and the drama is in the setting: cliffs, Atlantic swells and long views out over open water.
The head itself has a longer history than its wild appearance suggests. A signal tower was built here in 1805 by the British Admiralty as a lookout against a feared French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars, and the headland later hosted a coastal watch during the Second World War. Malin Head is also one of the sea areas named in the BBC Shipping Forecast, and the working weather station here still reports today. More recently, the headland appeared as a filming location for Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017.
