A seafront suburb on the north shore of Dublin Bay, famous as the site of Brian Boru’s 1014 battle and now known for its long promenade and Bull Island.
Clontarf lies on the north side of Dublin Bay, close enough to the city centre to reach on foot or by a short bus ride, yet with a seafront character all its own. Its name comes from the Irish Cluain Tarbh, the meadow of the bull, and it was here in 1014 that Brian Boru’s army fought a coalition of Viking and Leinster forces in one of the best-known battles in Irish history, though today the area is better known for its long, level promenade than for its past.
The seafront itself is a Clontarf institution: the promenade running along Clontarf Road was reclaimed from the bay in stages between the 1920s and the late 1950s, and it now gives a flat, uninterrupted walking and cycling route with views across the water to Howth Head. At its northern end, a wooden bridge crosses to North Bull Island, a sandbank nature reserve formed as a side effect of nineteenth-century harbour works.
