Fingal’s county town and one of the fastest-growing places in Ireland, built around a Norman archbishop’s castle and a well associated with St Colmcille, minutes from Dublin Airport.
Swords traces its name to the Irish "Sord", meaning pure, after a holy well founded here by St Colmcille around 560 AD. It grew into a substantial market town under the Anglo-Normans, who built Swords Castle in the centre of the town from around 1200 as a manorial palace and administrative base for the Archbishop of Dublin rather than a purely defensive fort. Restored by Fingal County Council and reopened to the public in 2015, the castle grounds are free to visit, with picnic spots, a playground and a regular seasonal food market.
A short walk away stands Swords Round Tower, believed to date to the 9th century, one of the few reminders that the town’s history reaches back well before the Normans. Since 1994 Swords has been the county town of Fingal, and the town centre today mixes that older heart with a large and steadily growing suburb, so a B&B here works equally well as a base for exploring north Dublin or simply for an overnight before an early flight.
Beyond the castle, the Ward River Valley Regional Park runs along the river just south of the town centre, a genuinely large green space of forest trails, meadows and a pond, easily reached on foot from Main Street and a good way to stretch your legs without needing a car.
