Trinity College and the Book of Kells

St Stephen’s Green
A twenty-two-acre Victorian public park at the top of Grafton Street, laid out with a lake, bandstand and formal flowerbeds. It has been open to the public since 1880 and remains the natural place to break up a day of walking or shopping in the city centre.
Grafton Street
Dublin’s best-known pedestrian shopping street runs from Trinity College to St Stephen’s Green, lined with shops, street performers and cafes. The side streets off it, particularly around Dawson Street and South William Street, hold most of the area’s independent restaurants and bars.
The National Gallery and National Museum
Both national institutions sit within a few minutes of each other near Merrion Square. The National Gallery holds Ireland’s foremost collection of European and Irish art, while the National Museum on Kildare Street has the Ardagh Chalice and the bog bodies among its archaeology collection. Both are free to enter.
Merrion Square
One of Dublin’s grandest Georgian squares, its terraces are known for brightly coloured front doors with fanlights above, a look that has become shorthand for Georgian Dublin. Oscar Wilde, who grew up across the road, is commemorated with a statue in the square’s park.
Dublin Castle
For centuries the seat of English and then British administration in Ireland, Dublin Castle is a working government complex today but opens its state apartments, medieval undercroft and Chapel Royal to visitors. It sits between Dublin 2 and the older medieval city to its west.
Temple Bar
The cobbled cultural quarter on the north edge of Dublin 2, across from Trinity, is Dublin’s densest concentration of pubs, live music and galleries. It is a short walk from most Dublin 2 addresses, so you can visit for an evening without needing to be in the thick of it overnight.
Getting to Dublin 2
Dublin Airport is about half an hour from Dublin 2 by road, with the Airlink and Aircoach bus services running directly into the city centre and a taxi rank at arrivals for a direct transfer. Heuston and Connolly, the two main rail stations, are both a short bus or taxi ride away. Once you are there, the area is compact enough to see almost entirely on foot.
