A pastel-painted fishing village on Bertraghboy Bay, founded for the herring trade in the 1820s and still one of the most photographed spots in Connemara.
Roundstone was laid out in the 1820s by the Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo, who brought Scottish fishing families to work a new harbour on the western shore of Bertraghboy Bay. Nearly two centuries on, it’s still a working village rather than a resort, a single curved street of pubs, craft shops and a small quay, set at the foot of Errisbeg hill with the Twelve Bens visible inland and the open Atlantic just beyond the village.
A B&B in Roundstone puts you within walking distance of the harbour and the village’s pubs, and within a short drive of two of Connemara’s best beaches, so it works equally well as a base for walking Errisbeg, exploring the bog, or simply sitting out an evening by the water.
Things to do near Errisbeg Lodge
Errisbeg
The 300m hill rising directly behind the village is a manageable climb with a summit view that takes in Roundstone Bog inland and the scatter of islands and inlets out towards the Atlantic.
Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay
Two blue-flag beaches of fine, almost white sand, made largely from broken coral and shell rather than quartz, lie back to back on a narrow spit just south of the village, joined by a short walk over the dunes.
Roundstone Bog
The blanket bog stretching inland from the village is part of the Connemara Bog Complex Special Area of Conservation, a landscape of small lakes and rocky outcrops important for its plant life and birdlife.
The harbour
Nimmo’s original quay is still a working pier, and the short walk along it gives the best view back over the village’s coloured houses to Errisbeg behind them.
Getting to Roundstone
Roundstone is on the R341 on the Wild Atlantic Way, about 18km south of Clifden and roughly an hour and a quarter west of Galway city. Galway is the nearest airport and rail terminus, and local bus services along the Connemara coast road are limited, so most visitors arrive by car.
Booking Errisbeg Lodge direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Errisbeg Lodge holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
