Staying in Clonbur

A small Irish-speaking village on the narrow strip of land between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, in the heart of Joyce Country.

Clonbur is a small village in the Gaeltacht area of south Galway, sitting on the isthmus that separates Lough Corrib from Lough Mask near the Mayo border. It is part of Joyce Country, the hill and lake district named for a Norman family who settled here in the 13th century, and the village itself is little more than a crossroads, a church and a handful of shops and pubs, which is exactly its appeal for visitors looking to get out onto the lakes and hills rather than shop or sightsee.

A stay here works as a quiet base for fishing, walking and touring rather than a destination with its own list of sights. Both lakes are internationally known for trout fishing, and the village is only minutes from Cong, the larger village straddling the Galway-Mayo border where Ashford Castle’s grounds and the Quiet Man film locations draw day visitors. Clonbur gives you the same lake and mountain scenery with a much quieter base to come back to in the evening.

Things to do near Lakeshore House

Mount Gable (the Hill of Doon)

Rising just west of the village, Mount Gable is a straightforward climb rewarded with views over both lakes at once, Lough Corrib to the south and Lough Mask to the north, with the hills of Connemara filling the western horizon. It is one of the best short walks in the area for the effort involved.

Cong village and Ashford Castle grounds

A few minutes from Clonbur, Cong sits on the isthmus between the two loughs and was the setting for John Ford’s 1952 film The Quiet Man. The grounds of Ashford Castle, a former Guinness family estate turned luxury hotel just outside the village, are open for walks along the lakeshore even if you are not staying there.

Lough Corrib and Lough Mask fishing

Both lakes have been a traditional centre for trout fishing since the 19th century, and Lough Corrib in particular, Ireland’s second-largest lake, is dotted with islands and inlets that make for good boat fishing and quiet exploring by water.

Joyce Country walking routes

The wider area is criss-crossed with looped walks and old droving roads through the Maamturk and Partry hills, giving access to genuinely remote-feeling countryside without needing to travel as far as Connemara proper.

Getting to Clonbur

Clonbur is reached by minor roads off the main N84 Galway to Castlebar route, and there is no rail or scheduled bus service into the village itself, so a car is effectively essential. Galway city is roughly an hour away by road, and the village is a similar distance from Westport in the other direction. Given the narrow rural roads in the area, allow a little extra time and expect the last stretch of any journey to be on quiet, single-lane roads.

Booking Lakeshore House direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

Lakeshore House holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
