A working fishing village on Connemara’s Atlantic coast, best known as the departure point for the ferry to Inishbofin.
Cleggan is a small harbour village at the head of Cleggan Bay in north Connemara, about 15 minutes from Clifden by road. Its pier, first built in 1822 by the engineer Alexander Nimmo and extended since, still supports a working fishing fleet as well as the passenger ferry, so the village has a working, unpolished feel rather than a purpose-built tourist stop.
For a B&B in Cleggan, the ferry to Inishbofin is the main event: the crossing takes about 30 minutes and is easily done as a day trip, with the island’s beaches, ruined fort and quiet lanes making a good contrast to the mainland. Back in the village, the pier and the bay are pleasant to walk regardless of whether you take the boat out.
Cleggan also makes a good quiet base for exploring the wider Connemara coast, with Clifden’s shops and restaurants a short drive away and the Sky Road and Connemara National Park both within easy reach.

Cleggan is on a local road off the N59, about 15 minutes from Clifden and roughly 90 minutes from Galway city. There is no train service this far into Connemara, so a car is the practical way to get here, though Bus Éireann services run into Clifden from Galway.
