The Latin Quarter

The Spanish Arch and City Museum

Salthill Promenade

The Claddagh
The old fishing village on the far bank of the Corrib once elected its own king, and it gave the world the Claddagh ring, the hands, heart and crown traditionally credited to a Galway goldsmith who learned his trade in captivity in Algiers. The swans along the Claddagh quays are the city’s calmest picture.
Galway Cathedral
Opened in 1965 on the site of the old city prison and built largely of local limestone, Galway’s cathedral is often described as the last great stone cathedral built in Europe. Its green copper dome anchors the skyline above the Corrib.
The Aran Islands
Ferries sail from Rossaveal, 37 kilometres west, with a connecting shuttle from the city centre, crossing to Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr in around forty minutes. Done as a day trip with a bike on the far side, it is the best-value adventure the city offers.
Festival July
The Arts Festival brings over 200 shows across two weeks, then the Galway Races take over at Ballybrit for seven days into early August. The city holds UNESCO City of Film status and was European Capital of Culture for 2020, and in July you can feel why.
Connemara and the Burren
Daily coach tours loop north through Connemara and Kylemore Abbey or south through the Burren to the Cliffs of Moher, each a full day from the city without needing a car. Galway is the hinge between the two landscapes.
Getting to Galway city
Galway’s Ceannt station on Eyre Square runs direct trains to Dublin Heuston roughly every two hours, and Citylink and GoBus coaches connect the city to Dublin and Dublin Airport about every half hour. Shannon Airport is around 90 kilometres south and Ireland West at Knock a similar distance north, each with bus links. The centre is best walked, since it was laid out centuries before the car.
