A quiet crossroads village in the Roughty Valley, tucked between Kenmare and Killarney on one of Kerry’s less-travelled roads.
Kilgarvan sits on the Roughty River as it winds down toward Kenmare Bay, in a mountainous stretch of mid-Kerry away from the main Ring of Kerry traffic. Kenmare is about 11km west along the R569, and the road east climbs on toward Killarney via Clonkeen, so the village works as a calmer alternative base for touring both without ever being far from either.
The area has real history behind it: Kilgarvan was the site of the Battle of Callann in 1261, a defeat that checked Norman power in Kerry for the best part of three centuries, and the ivy-covered shell of Ardtully House, a 19th-century mansion burned in 1921, still stands nearby. For a quieter stay, there is also a Coillte forest walk and a small motor museum in the village itself.

A Coillte-managed native woodland just outside the village, with looped walking trails through oak and birch along the Roughty valley, a gentle option for an afternoon away from the car.
Ardtully House
The castellated ruin of an 1847 mansion built on much older foundations, burned during the War of Independence in 1921 and left as it was. It stands close to the site of the Battle of Callann of 1261, one of the more significant Kerry battles of the medieval period.
Kilgarvan Motor Museum
A small village museum with a collection of vintage and classic cars, an easy stop for anyone touring the area by road.
