A quiet village on the Shannon estuary in north Kerry, best known for the tower house of Carrigafoyle Castle standing guard over the water nearby.
Ballylongford is a small estuary village between Listowel and Tarbert in north Kerry, looking out over the tidal flats and reed beds where the Shannon widens towards the Atlantic. It is quiet, unhurried ground, the kind of base that suits people who want the Shannon estuary and north Kerry’s countryside rather than a busy town centre.
Just outside the village, Carrigafoyle Castle is the standout reason to stop. Built in the late 15th century by the O’Connor Kerry chieftains on a rocky islet at the water’s edge, it was known as the "Guardian of the Shannon" for its command of the shipping lane to Limerick, and was badly damaged in a famous 1580 siege during the Second Desmond Rebellion. The OPW keeps it free to visit, and the climb to the top of the five-storey tower is rewarded with wide views over the estuary.
Things to do near Castle View House
Carrigafoyle Castle
A late 15th century O’Connor Kerry tower house on the edge of the Shannon estuary, over 24 metres tall with a winding stair to the top, free to visit and managed by the OPW. It withstood a bloody siege by English forces in 1580 that left much of its western wall in ruins.
The Shannon estuary
The wide tidal reaches around Ballylongford are rich in birdlife, with wading birds and wildfowl working the mudflats at low tide, and quiet estuary roads good for a slow drive or cycle.
Tarbert to Killimer ferry
A short drive from Ballylongford, the car ferry across the Shannon at Tarbert is the quickest way over to west Clare, cutting out a long detour via Limerick and putting the Cliffs of Moher within easy reach for the day.
Getting to Ballylongford
Ballylongford lies just off the N69 Limerick to Tralee road, with Listowel about 20 minutes away and Tarbert, and its ferry across to County Clare, a few minutes further. Shannon Airport is roughly 45 minutes away via the Tarbert-Killimer crossing, and Kerry Airport is around an hour to the southwest.
Booking Castle View House direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Castle View House holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
