A fishing town at the heart of the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht, where Slea Head Drive begins and the pubs play music nightly.
Dingle, Daingean Uí Chúis in Irish, is the largest town on the Dingle Peninsula and still a working fishing port, its coloured shopfronts and pubs gathered around the harbour. Much of the peninsula is a Gaeltacht, an Irish-speaking district, so the language is alive here on signage, in the schools and in conversation, which gives a stay a texture few Irish towns can match.
For a B&B in Dingle, the evenings are half the point. The town is renowned for traditional music, with sessions in its pubs through the year, and each December the Other Voices festival records in the 200-year-old St James’ Church, with performances streamed to pubs around the town. Add seafood landed at the pier and a distillery on the edge of town and the nights fill themselves.
By day, the town is the base for the far west. Slea Head Drive, the great loop of the peninsula’s Atlantic tip, starts and ends here, and the Blasket Islands, the beehive huts and some of the oldest Christian ruins in Ireland are all within a short drive. Dingle was also home to Fungie, the bottlenose dolphin who met the boats in the harbour for 37 years until he disappeared in 2020, and the town still tells his story fondly.
Things to do near Castlewood House
Slea Head Drive
The R559 loops out of Dingle around the peninsula’s western tip, part of the Wild Atlantic Way, passing beehive huts, famine cottages, Coumeenoole’s cliffs and long views to the Blasket Islands. Driven clockwise, as signposted, it is comfortably a half day with stops, and it begins at the edge of the town.
The Gallarus Oratory
A dry-stone oratory shaped like an upturned boat, built without mortar and still watertight, believed to date from somewhere between the 7th and 12th centuries. It is one of only three Irish dry-stone churches with an intact corbelled roof, and it sits just off the Slea Head loop.
The Blasket Centre
At Dún Chaoin, near the westernmost point of the peninsula, the Blasket Centre tells the story of the Great Blasket Island community, whose writers produced classics of Irish literature before the island was finally evacuated in 1953. The building looks straight out at the islands themselves.
The Conor Pass
One of the highest mountain passes in Ireland, at 456 metres, climbing north out of Dingle on a narrow road between cliffs and corrie lakes before dropping to Brandon Bay. On a clear day the view takes in both sides of the peninsula at once.
Mount Brandon
At 952 metres, Brandon is the highest Irish mountain outside MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, rising just north of the town and named for St Brendan the Navigator. The pilgrim path to the summit is a serious but achievable day for a fit walker in good weather.
Dingle Distillery
Founded in 2012 in a converted sawmill on the edge of the town, the first purpose-built independent distillery to open in Ireland in over 150 years, producing whiskey, gin and vodka. Tours run daily and finish with a tasting.
Inch Beach
A five-kilometre spit of sand running out into Dingle Bay, about half an hour east of the town, with surf lessons in summer and one of the great beach walks of the southwest at any time of year.
Getting to Dingle
Dingle is about 50 kilometres west of Tralee on the N86, with the Conor Pass as the spectacular alternative route north. Bus Éireann runs a daily service to Tralee, around an hour away, where the nearest railway station connects onward, and Kerry Airport at Farranfore is roughly an hour’s drive. The peninsula’s lanes are narrow, so give your B&B the Eircode and take the drive easy.
