Caherciveen, also spelled Cahersiveen or Cahirciveen, sits directly on the Ring of Kerry road on the north side of the Iveragh Peninsula, looking out towards Valentia Island. It is a proper working town rather than a tourist village, with a long main street, a harbour, and a much quieter pace than Killarney or Dingle, which makes it a good choice for anyone who wants to be based on the Ring itself without the crowds. It is roughly an hour and a quarter from Killarney by road.
The town’s single biggest association is with Daniel O’Connell, the nineteenth-century political leader known as the Liberator, who was born just outside Caherciveen in 1775 and whose legacy shapes much of what there is to see here. Beyond that history, a stay in the town works well as a base for the Skellig Ring, the smaller loop that breaks off the main Ring of Kerry road, and for Valentia Island itself, which sits just across the water.
Because it is roughly midway around the Ring, a night or two in Caherciveen suits people touring the full peninsula rather than day-tripping from Killarney, letting you take in the western and northern stretches, Valentia, Portmagee and the Skellig Ring at a proper pace instead of rushing them in a single long loop.

Daniel O’Connell’s birthplace and memorial
O’Connell was born at Carhan, just outside the town on the Killarney side of the bridge, where a monument now overlooks the site. His long campaign for Catholic Emancipation, achieved in 1829, is central to the town’s identity, and is marked again in the centre of Caherciveen itself.
The Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church
Built between 1888 and 1902, this striking church dominates the town centre and is one of only a small number of Catholic churches anywhere dedicated to a layperson rather than a saint.
The Old Barracks Heritage Centre
A château-style former Royal Irish Constabulary barracks from 1875, with turrets and heavy stonework that look more like a French chateau than a rural Irish police station. Burned during the War of Independence, it now houses exhibitions on O’Connell, the Fenian Rising and South Kerry history.
Ballycarbery Castle and the stone forts
Just outside town, the ivy-covered ruin of Ballycarbery Castle stands near two well-preserved stone ring forts, Cahergal and Leacanabuaile, both dating from the early medieval period and giving a real sense of the peninsula’s much older history.
White Strand beach
A clean sandy beach a short drive from town, with views across to Valentia and Beginish Islands, and Ballycarbery Castle and the stone forts within easy reach along the same road.
Valentia Island
Reached by a five-minute car ferry from Reenard Point just outside Caherciveen, or by bridge at Portmagee further round the Ring, Valentia has its own cliffs, lighthouse and the Skellig Experience centre, and makes an easy half-day trip from the town.
Getting to Caherciveen
Caherciveen sits on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, about an hour and a quarter from Killarney and around the same from Kerry Airport. Bus Éireann’s route between Killarney and Cahersiveen runs year-round, and Local Link services connect on to Valentia Island and Portmagee for those without a car. The Reenard Point ferry to Valentia runs frequently through the day from April to October.
