A brightly painted Ring of Kerry village where the River Sneem meets Kenmare Bay.
Sneem sits on the Iveragh Peninsula where the River Sneem widens into Kenmare Bay, and takes its name from the Irish An tSnaidhm, meaning the knot, a reference either to its place in the loop of the Ring of Kerry or to the bridge tying its two small squares together. It is best known for its houses, painted in bold colours that have earned the village repeated Tidy Towns awards and made it one of the most photographed stops on the Ring.
A B&B in Sneem puts you close to the midpoint of the Ring of Kerry, within easy reach of Kenmare to the east and Waterville and the Skellig Ring to the west, and right on Kenmare Bay itself, with the Wild Atlantic Way running along the shore. It suits a slower pace on the Ring, a night here breaking the drive rather than pushing straight through in a single day.
The village’s two squares, joined by the bridge over the river, hold most of its pubs and shops, and a stone monument in the North Square marks a stop made by French President Charles de Gaulle in 1969, one of the more unusual footnotes in the village’s history.
Things to do near Sneem River Lodge
The colourful village squares
Sneem’s North and South Squares, linked by a bridge over the River Sneem, are lined with houses painted in vivid colours, a tradition locals keep up and one that has won the village numerous Tidy Towns awards.
Staigue Fort
A short drive from Sneem towards Waterville, Staigue Fort is one of the finest stone ring forts in Ireland, its walls up to five and a half metres high enclosing a circular area on a low hill with views over Kenmare Bay. It is thought to date from around the fifth century AD.
Kenmare Stone Circle
Along the road towards Kenmare, this Bronze Age stone circle is one of the largest in the southwest of Ireland, with a boulder dolmen at its centre and a large capstone, and is an easy stop for anyone continuing on from Sneem.
Parknasilla and the coast road
The coast road east of Sneem runs through Parknasilla, a stretch of sheltered, sub-tropical grounds along Kenmare Bay that is part of the Wild Atlantic Way and a pleasant detour on the way in or out of the village.
Getting to Sneem
Sneem is on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, about half an hour from Kenmare and roughly an hour from Killarney and Kerry Airport. The road is well used by tour coaches in summer, so early starts and evening arrivals tend to be quieter. There is no rail service to the village, so a car or the seasonal Ring of Kerry bus routes are the practical way to reach it.
Booking Sneem River Lodge direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b

No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
