A tiny village on the Ring of Kerry looking out over Derrynane Bay, best known as the home place of Daniel O’Connell.
Caherdaniel is little more than a cluster of houses and pubs on the N70, but its setting, on Derrynane Bay with the Iveragh peninsula’s mountains behind it, is one of the most scenic on the whole Ring of Kerry. Derrynane House, the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, the 19th-century lawyer and statesman known as the Liberator, sits within its own national historic park just outside the village and is now a museum to his life, holding among its collection the ceremonial chariot presented to him by the people of Dublin in 1844.
A B&B in Caherdaniel puts you a short walk from Derrynane’s beach and dune system, part of the same national historic park as the house, and within easy reach of Staigue Fort, an impressive Iron Age stone ringfort a few kilometres inland. The Kerry Way long-distance walking trail also passes through the village, so it works well for anyone breaking up a multi-day walk as much as for a Ring of Kerry driving tour.
The village is small enough that it has no real facilities of its own to speak of, and that is really the appeal: a quiet base between the busier stops at Waterville and Sneem, with Coomakista Pass just along the road giving one of the best coastal viewpoints on the whole route.

Derrynane House and National Historic Park
The former home of Daniel O’Connell stands in 320 acres of parkland on the coast and is run today as a museum to his life, with his furniture, books and personal artefacts on display, including the chariot given to him by the citizens of Dublin in 1844.
Derrynane Beach
Within the same national historic park, this beach and dune system includes a tidal causeway out to Abbey Island, exposed at low tide, with the ruins of an old abbey and graveyard on it.
Staigue Fort
A few kilometres inland from the village, this is one of the finest surviving Iron Age stone ringforts in Ireland, with massive dry-stone walls up to four metres thick.
The Kerry Way
Ireland’s longest waymarked trail runs right through Caherdaniel on its loop of the Iveragh peninsula, making the village a natural overnight stop for walkers.
Coomakista Pass
A short drive west along the N70 towards Waterville, this high pass gives one of the best-known views on the Ring of Kerry, out over Derrynane and the islands offshore.
Getting to Caherdaniel
Caherdaniel sits directly on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, about thirty minutes from Kenmare and around an hour from Killarney. Kerry Airport at Farranfore is roughly an hour’s drive, and the village is best reached by car given its position on the peninsula.
