Beaufort is a small village on the River Laune in County Kerry, about fifteen minutes west of Killarney town on the road to Killorglin. It sits directly under the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, the range that holds Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest peak, which makes it the natural base for anyone here to walk or climb rather than just sightsee. The village itself is modest, a post office, a few pubs and guesthouses, and a scatter of houses, but it punches well above its size for what is on the doorstep.
A B&B in Beaufort puts you at the mouth of the Gap of Dunloe, the glacial mountain pass that is one of the most photographed drives and walks in Kerry, and within easy reach of Killarney National Park, Muckross House and the lakes, without the crowds or the town-centre traffic that come with staying in Killarney itself. Carrauntoohil and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks
Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest mountain at just over a thousand metres, and Beaufort is one of the main starting points for routes up it and along the wider Reeks range. The Hag’s Glacial Valley and Devil’s Ladder routes both begin from trailheads close to the village.
Killarney National Park and Muckross House
Killarney National Park, with its lakes, Torc Waterfall and the nineteenth-century Muckross House and gardens, starts within a few minutes’ drive of Beaufort, so a day of walking or cycling the park is easily combined with a night in the village.
Dunloe Castle and the Ogham stones
The area around Beaufort holds over a hundred mapped historical sites, including the ruins of Dunloe Castle, built in the thirteenth century, and a notable collection of Ogham stones, early inscribed standing stones, gathered near the old castle grounds.
Tomies Wood
On the shore of Lough Leane above Beaufort, Tomies Wood is one of the largest surviving areas of native oak woodland in Ireland, part of the Killarney National Park UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a good spot for a quieter woodland walk.
Getting to Beaufort
Beaufort is just off the N72 Killarney to Killorglin road, about fifteen minutes from Killarney town by car. Kerry Airport is around half an hour away, and Killarney has its own train station with regular services from Cork and Dublin, so most visitors pick up transport there for the last short leg. The Gap of Dunloe road itself is narrow and often closed to cars in summer in favour of walkers, cyclists and pony traps, so check locally before driving it.
