A Grand Canal town in Kildare, sometimes called the "Venice of Ireland" for its bridges, and long-time home of tenor Count John McCormack.
Monasterevin takes its name from a monastery founded here by St Evin in the 6th century, followed by a Cistercian abbey in 1189. Its more visible history is later: the Grand Canal arrived in 1786 and still runs through the town, crossing the River Barrow on a three-arched limestone aqueduct built in 1826, and the number of bridges needed to stitch the town back together earned it the nickname the "Venice of Ireland".
Moore Abbey, a Gothic-style house built in the late 1760s for the Earl of Drogheda, is the town's other landmark, best known as the home of the great Irish tenor Count John McCormack from 1927 to 1939. Between the canal, the Barrow and the old market streets, it's a compact, walkable town to base a B&B stay in.
Monasterevin was bypassed by the M7 in 2004, so it's now a quieter stop just off the main Dublin to Limerick and Cork road, with a rail station on the same Dublin-Cork line putting Dublin's Heuston Station under 45 minutes away.

The Grand Canal and Barrow Aqueduct

Built in the late 1760s in Gothic style for the Earl of Drogheda, Moore Abbey is best known as the home of tenor Count John McCormack between 1927 and 1939.
Monastic origins
The town takes its name from a monastery founded by St Evin in the 6th century, later followed by a Cistercian abbey founded in 1189, the roots of the settlement that grew up here.

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
