A small Kildare village built around one of the tallest and best-preserved high crosses in Ireland.
Moone is a small village on the N9 between Dublin and Kilkenny, built around the ruins of an early monastic site said to have been founded in the 5th century. Its great high cross, carved from granite and standing over five metres tall with its base, is one of the tallest in the country and among the most complete, its panels still clearly showing scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
The cross lay buried for centuries until parts of it were uncovered in 1835 during graveyard works, and a missing section was later found and reunited with the rest in 1893. It now stands under a small protective roof within the abbey ruins, a short walk from the village.
