A small village on the River Nore in south Kilkenny, its ten-arched bridge and tree-lined square giving it the look of a place built for film.
Inistioge is little more than a square, a scatter of coloured houses and a long stone bridge over the Nore, but it is one of the prettiest villages in the southeast, and it has been used often enough as a filming location, including for "Circle of Friends" and "Widow’s Peak" in the 1990s, that its streets feel familiar even on a first visit. The ten-arched bridge dates from 1765 and is still the way most traffic crosses the river into the village.
Just outside the village, Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum is the main reason to base yourself here for more than a passing visit. Laid out in Victorian times around Woodstock House, a Georgian mansion burned during the Civil War in 1922 and left a ruin ever since, the gardens have been carefully restored by Kilkenny County Council and include a walled garden, a rose garden, an avenue of monkey puzzle trees and long woodland walks over the Nore valley.
Inistioge is small enough that a stay here is really about the river, the gardens and the surrounding valley rather than the village itself, which suits travellers looking for a quiet, scenic base within easy reach of Kilkenny city and New Ross.
Things to do near Cullintra House
Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum
Overlooking the Nore valley just outside the village, these Victorian gardens include a walled garden, a rose garden, a recreated Turner conservatory and an arboretum with rare and exotic trees, alongside the ruined shell of Woodstock House itself, burned during the Civil War in 1922.
The bridge and village square
Inistioge’s ten-arched stone bridge, built in 1765, and its lime-tree-lined square give the village its well-known good looks, and its use as a filming location for "Circle of Friends" and "Widow’s Peak" has only added to that reputation.
The Nore Valley Walk
A quiet riverside path follows the River Nore from the village, popular for an easy walk and, for anglers, for salmon and trout fishing along the way.
Kilkenny city
Kilkenny’s medieval streets, castle and cathedral are around half an hour’s drive away, an easy day trip for visitors based in Inistioge for the quieter countryside.
Getting to Inistioge
Inistioge lies on the R700, a short drive from both New Ross and Thomastown, with Thomastown railway station, on the Dublin to Waterford line, about ten minutes away by car. Kilkenny city, with its own station and better bus connections, is around half an hour further on, and most visitors find a car the easiest way to reach the village itself given the winding country roads on the approach.

A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
