A south Kilkenny village on the Waterford border, whose name recalls a mill that could once only be reached by a stick laid across the river.
Mullinavat (Muileann an Bhata) grew up around a river crossing in the barony of Knocktopher, about 12km north of Waterford city. Its unusual name is said to come from a local mill that could only be approached by a rough stick spanning the river near where Mullinavat Bridge now stands, and the village itself only really took shape after a church was built here in 1805.
The M9 motorway bypassed Mullinavat in 2010, taking the through-traffic off the old village street and leaving a quieter base that is still only minutes from the motorway at junction 11. That makes it a handy, low-key stop for exploring both south Kilkenny and the Waterford side of the border, including the Waterford Greenway and Mount Congreve Gardens, both within about five minutes’ drive.

Waterford Greenway and Mount Congreve
The 46km Waterford Greenway walking and cycling trail, and the gardens at Mount Congreve, are both within a few minutes of Mullinavat, making the village a convenient, quiet base for a day on the trail.
Mullinavat’s old railway station
Opened in 1853 and closed in 1963, the disused station building survives and is on the Record of Protected Structures, a reminder of the village’s place on the old Waterford to Kilkenny line.
Close to Waterford city
Waterford city, with its Viking Triangle and medieval quarter, is about 12km south, easily reached now that the M9 has taken through-traffic off the village street.
Getting to Mullinavat
Mullinavat is just off junction 11 of the M9, about 12km north of Waterford city and roughly half an hour south of Kilkenny city. Waterford has rail connections to Dublin and Kilkenny, and Waterford Airport is a short drive away.
Booking Glenraha Farmhouse direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Glenraha Farmhouse holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
