A riverside market town on the Kilkenny bank of the Barrow, gathered around one of Ireland’s largest medieval Cistercian abbeys.
Graiguenamanagh, whose name means village of the monks, sits on the River Barrow at the foot of Brandon Hill, County Kilkenny’s highest point. The main body of the town, including its shops, pubs and the abbey itself, is on the Kilkenny bank, with the smaller settlement of Tinnahinch facing it across the river on the County Carlow side, linked by a seven-arched limestone bridge built in 1764.
The town grew up around Duiske Abbey, founded in 1207 and the largest of Ireland’s thirty-four medieval Cistercian monasteries, and later thrived as a working port on the Barrow Navigation, with barge traffic continuing until 1959.
