Carrick-on-Shannon, Cora Droma Rúisc in Irish, is the county town of Leitrim and sits at a strategic crossing point of the River Shannon. It was once the stronghold of the O’Rourkes of Breifne, and was granted a royal charter as a borough in 1607. Although a small part of the town spills across the river into County Roscommon, the town’s main streets and shops sit on the Leitrim bank, making this properly the county town in more than just name.
For over a century, until the mid-20th century, Carrick was a major depot for river trade, with timber, hardware and Guinness stout barged in from Dublin, Athlone and Limerick. That river heritage lives on today in a different form: the town is one of Ireland’s busiest inland cruising hubs, sitting where the Shannon meets the Shannon-Erne Waterway, a restored canal linking through to the Erne system in County Fermanagh.

Costello Chapel
