Staying in Bruff

A south Limerick market town by Lough Gur, with a family history that runs all the way to a US president.

Bruff is a market town in the Ballyhoura area of east Limerick, on the old Limerick to Cork road, with the Morning Star River running through its centre under two town bridges. Its history reaches back well before the town itself, into the Stone Age and Bronze Age remains found in the surrounding countryside.

The single biggest reason to base here is Lough Gur, one of Ireland's most important archaeological sites, a horseshoe-shaped lake just outside town ringed by megalithic remains, including the Grange stone circle, the largest of its kind in Ireland. The lake and its heritage centre make for an easy day out from a B&B in Bruff.

Bruff also has a well-documented American connection: Thomas Fitzgerald emigrated from the town in 1852, and his grandson John F Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States. The Thomas Fitzgerald Centre, in the old courthouse, tells that story, including Kennedy's own 1963 visit to Ireland.

Booking The Old Bank direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

The Old Bank holds a 4-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
