A west Limerick market town built around the ruined Desmond Castle and Banqueting Hall, with a strong local tradition of poetry running back three centuries.
Newcastle West is a working market town on the road between Limerick city and Kerry, its square dominated by the ruins of Desmond Castle, begun in the thirteenth century and expanded into a grand banqueting hall by the Earls of Desmond in the fifteenth. The restored hall, with its musicians’ gallery and hooded fireplace, still stands right at the centre of town, an unusually substantial medieval building for a town of this size.
The town also has a real literary thread running through it. The poet Michael Hartnett, commemorated with a statue beside the castle and the annual Éigse Michael Hartnett festival, grew up in the area, and Newcastle West sits close to the Maigue Valley, home to the eighteenth-century Maigue Poets, a Gaelic literary circle still marked today by the Féile na Máighe festival held across the district.
For a B&B stay, Newcastle West works well as a base for west Limerick, close to the well-known village of Adare, and on the direct route for anyone touring between Limerick city and the Kerry coast.

Booking The Orchard direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
The Orchard holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
