Drogheda grew from two separate medieval towns, one on each bank of the Boyne, chartered in the 1190s and formally united in 1412. The Anglo-Normans made it a major stronghold, completing town walls that once enclosed 113 acres and ran for over 3.5km, among the largest of any walled town in Ireland at the time. St Laurence’s Gate, a twin-towered gateway regarded as one of the finest surviving examples in Europe, still stands over the street that takes its name today.
