Grove House

A medieval village on the edge of Carlingford Lough, tucked between the water and the Cooley Mountains on the Louth border with Northern Ireland.

Carlingford grew up as a Norman port on the southern shore of Carlingford Lough, and its medieval bones are still the first thing you notice: narrow streets, the ruins of King John’s Castle guarding the harbour mouth, and fortified townhouses like Taaffe’s Castle and the Mint standing among the shopfronts. The Cooley Mountains rise directly behind the village, with Slieve Foye the highest point, so the setting does a lot of the work, water on one side and mountain on the other, in a village small enough to walk in ten minutes.

A B&B here works well as a base for both the history and the outdoors. The village itself rewards an evening’s wander among its medieval buildings and harbour, and the Carlingford Lough Greenway gives an easy, mostly flat walking or cycling route along the shore. Above the village, Slieve Foye Forest Park has waymarked trails up into the Cooleys, with views back down over the lough to the Mourne Mountains on the Northern Ireland side of the water.

Carlingford is also known for its oysters, farmed in the lough for generations, and the village keeps a reputation for good seafood alongside its heritage appeal. The Cooley Peninsula around it is the setting for the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the great early Irish saga of the Cattle Raid of Cooley, and the Táin Trail follows a looped route through the mountains for anyone who wants to walk the landscape the story is set in.

Being right on the border, Carlingford also sits naturally on a route between the east coast and Northern Ireland, close to Newry and within reach of the Mourne Mountains across the water. That makes it a good stopover for a longer trip north or south, as well as a destination in its own right for a couple of nights.
