Carlingford village
A well-preserved medieval town on the lough shore, Carlingford still has its Norman castle, tower houses and narrow lanes, plus a working harbour known for its oysters and mussels. It sits about twenty minutes from Dundalk and is an easy stop for a walk and something to eat.
The Táin Way
A 40km signposted walking trail circling the Cooley Peninsula, the Táin Way is named after the old Irish saga Táin Bó Cúailnge, much of which is set in this landscape. Shorter sections make for a good half-day walk without committing to the full loop.
County Museum Dundalk
Housed in a restored eighteenth-century warehouse in the town centre, the County Museum covers County Louth’s history from prehistory to its industrial past across three galleries. It is a good wet-weather option and gives useful context for the Cooley sites nearby.
The Proleek Dolmen
Set in the grounds of the Ballymascanlon estate just outside town, the Proleek Dolmen is one of the finest surviving portal tombs in Ireland, its huge capstone balanced on three uprights. It is easily reached on a short walk and free to visit.
St Patrick’s Cathedral
Built in the 1830s and 40s and modelled on the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, Dundalk’s Catholic cathedral is a striking piece of architecture right in the town centre, worth a look even from the footpath outside.
Getting to Dundalk
Dundalk sits directly on the M1 motorway, about an hour north of Dublin and roughly the same distance south of Belfast, which makes it one of the easiest towns on the east coast to reach by car.
