A medieval village on the edge of Carlingford Lough, tucked between the water and the Cooley Mountains on the Louth border with Northern Ireland.
Carlingford grew up as a Norman port on the southern shore of Carlingford Lough, and its medieval bones are still the first thing you notice: narrow streets, the ruins of King John’s Castle guarding the harbour mouth, and fortified townhouses like Taaffe’s Castle and the Mint standing among the shopfronts. The Cooley Mountains rise directly behind the village, with Slieve Foye the highest point, so the setting does a lot of the work, water on one side and mountain on the other, in a village small enough to walk in ten minutes.

The village itself rewards an evening’s wander among its medieval buildings and harbour, and the Carlingford Lough Greenway gives an easy, mostly flat walking or cycling route along the shore. Being right on the border, Carlingford also sits naturally on a route between the east coast and Northern Ireland, close to Newry and within reach of the Mourne Mountains across the water. Carlingford Lough Greenway
A largely flat, traffic-free walking and cycling route along the shore of the lough, the Greenway connects Carlingford towards Omeath and gives easy access to the water’s edge without needing a car.
Oysters and the Cooley Peninsula
Carlingford Lough has been farmed for oysters for generations, and the village’s food reputation leans heavily on seafood as a result. The Cooley Peninsula around the village is also a producer of the Carlingford cheese made locally, and a scenic drive in its own right.

Getting to Carlingford
Carlingford sits just off the M1 motorway between Dublin, around an hour and a quarter to the south, and Belfast, a similar distance north, making it an easy stop by car in either direction. Dundalk, the nearest town, has a mainline rail connection to Dublin and Belfast, with Carlingford itself reached by local road from there.
