One of Europe’s major Marian shrines, built around an apparition witnessed by fifteen local people in 1879.
Knock is a small County Mayo village that grew almost entirely around its shrine. On the evening of 21 August 1879, fifteen parishioners reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist on the south gable of the parish church, and the site has drawn pilgrims ever since. Today Ireland’s International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine ranks alongside Lourdes and Fatima as a major Catholic pilgrimage destination, with around one and a half million visitors a year.

Formally the Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland, this large modern church was built under Monsignor James Horan, parish priest from 1967 until 1986, and holds a tapestry depicting the 1879 apparition. It is built to accommodate the large crowds that gather for major pilgrimage days.
Knock Folk Museum
Set within the shrine grounds, the museum covers both the story of the apparition and the shrine’s growth, and traditional rural life in nineteenth-century Mayo, giving useful context for the village’s transformation.
Ireland West Airport Knock
Built after a determined campaign by Monsignor Horan and opened in 1985, the airport was once dismissed as an implausible project for a small rural village, but today handles regular flights and is only a short drive from the shrine.

Beyond the basilica and apparition chapel, the grounds include a Way of the Cross, chapels for private prayer and confession, and open space for outdoor ceremonies during the main pilgrimage season from spring to autumn.
Getting to Knock
Knock sits just off the N17, roughly midway between Galway and Sligo, and about half an hour from Castlebar. Ireland West Airport Knock is a short drive from the village and handles scheduled flights, while Bus Éireann services connect Knock to towns across the west. Its location on the N17 also makes it a straightforward overnight stop for anyone driving a longer route through Mayo and Sligo.
