A planned Georgian town on Clew Bay at the foot of Croagh Patrick, with a greenway out the back door and one of the best pub scenes in the west.
Westport is one of the few planned towns in Ireland, laid out in the 18th century around the Westport House estate, and the design still carries the place: tree-lined promenades along the Carrowbeg river, stone bridges, and streets that meet where they should. It sits on Clew Bay on the Wild Atlantic Way, with Croagh Patrick rising over the water a few kilometres west.
For a B&B in Westport, the evenings are as strong a reason as the scenery. The town won the Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland in 2012 and has taken the national Tidy Towns title three times, and it shows in a centre that is genuinely lived in, with restaurants strong on Atlantic seafood and music in the pubs most nights. By day it is the adventure base of Mayo. The Great Western Greenway starts here, the Reek is a morning’s climb, Achill is a day trip, and Clew Bay itself works for kayaking and island hopping, so a few nights fill themselves without the car doing much work.
Things to do near Brooklodge
Croagh Patrick
Ireland’s holy mountain rises 764 metres above Clew Bay, with the pilgrim path starting at Murrisk, about eight kilometres from town. St Patrick is said to have fasted forty days on the summit, and on Reek Sunday, the last Sunday of July, thousands still climb, some barefoot. On a clear day the summit view over the bay’s scattered islands is the best in the west.
The Great Western Greenway
Ireland’s first great greenway runs 42 kilometres off-road from Westport to Achill along the route of the old railway, through Newport and Mulranny, opened in stages in 2010 and 2011. Bike hire operates in the town, and the full run to Achill Sound and back by bus makes one of the finest easy cycling days in the country.
Westport House
Built in 1730 for the Browne family, direct descendants of the pirate queen Grace O’Malley, and their home for almost three centuries. The house stands on the site of one of her 16th-century castles, and her dungeons survive beneath it, which makes the tour far better fun than the phrase “stately home” suggests.
Clew Bay
The bay is a scatter of sunken drumlins left by the last ice age, said locally to hold an island for every day of the year, though the true count is closer to 120. Boat trips and sea kayaking get you out among them, and the view of the bay from Croagh Patrick explains the legend.
Achill Island and Keem Bay
Ireland’s largest island is a day trip of about an hour and a quarter, ending, if you drive the road to its very end, at Keem Bay, a horseshoe of pale sand between cliffs. Pair it with the greenway villages of Newport and Mulranny on the way back.
Murrisk
The little shore village below Croagh Patrick holds the ruined Murrisk Abbey, founded in 1457, and the National Famine Memorial, John Behan’s bronze coffin ship, unveiled in 1997. Both sit a few minutes from the mountain car park, so the history comes with the climb.
Clare Island
A short ferry from Roonagh Pier west of Louisburgh crosses to Clare Island, guarding the mouth of Clew Bay, where Grace O’Malley’s tower house stands over the harbour and the medieval abbey holds the O’Malley tombs. It makes a fine slow day out from a Westport base.
Music at Matt Molloy’s
The flute player of The Chieftains opened his pub on Bridge Street in 1989 and the back room has hosted nightly traditional sessions ever since, with a live album recorded on the premises. Arrive early, since half the town has the same idea.
Getting to Westport
Westport is one of the easiest west-coast towns to reach without a car, with its own railway station running direct trains to Dublin Heuston via Castlebar. Ireland West Airport at Knock is about an hour away, Galway is an hour and a quarter by road, and Bus Éireann routes connect the town to Achill, Louisburgh and the airport. The town centre is compact, so once you arrive the car can stay parked.
